PAFA Open Studio Night

2/11/12

It was night time, and I only shone a few spotlights on the night sky paintings so visitors could see the city lights outside. This made most visitors hesitant about coming in, which worked out well, since the few who knew where they were going knew how to find me.
A good night all around.
If you want to come visit my studio at PAFA before I graduate in May, get in contact with me and I'll give you a personal tour. Who knows when I'll have another studio on top of a tower in the middle of the city, after all.
I am continuing to streamline this website, and have started tagging images of paintings that have been lost or walked away over the years in hopes of tracking them down.
There are about a half dozen exhibitions and openings coming up between now and July that I will be participating in, so look for an update about those very soon.
Special thanks to my friend Bonnie McCallister, who is a dynamo, and to the WCA for the sweet write up on their blog http://phila-wca.blogspot.com/2012/02/member-news-ana-vizcarra-rankin.html

Cheers.

It begins

1/4/12

Happy New Year!

I don't believe in resolutions- and if I did I would make them on midwinter night. But seeing as I only have a few short months left before I become a Master of Fine Arts, I figure it's high time to get my website to reflect my new status.
So I'm using the next couple of weeks before the Spring semester starts to redesign this site (maybe scrap it altogether, who knows), and plan to post something to this blog at least once a week, if for no other reason than to keep track of my thoughts during the upcoming trials ahead.
So here I go!
The world is ending this year anyway, right?

Out In Out

10/21/11

  winter circle

Out In Out

November 4 – November 27, 2011

Opening Reception: Friday, November 4, 6 – 9 PM

MBN Studios presents Out In Out, curated by Michael Moore and Paul Hamanaka.

Michael and Paul both teach drawing at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

It is our wish that each drawing will consist of the ingredients that are similar to those of

human beings – an epidermis, an outside, a surface - that introduce and reveal a life

being lived within, enticing and encouraging others to look harder and inquire more, to

better know the interior – the energy, personality, mind, spirit, and soul – so that the life-

affirming dynamic relationship between what-we-can-see and what-we-cannot-see in your

drawings will inspire in us something about those same qualities in all of us - how we look

because of who we are and who we are because of how we look – just like drawing, just

like art – Out In Out.

There are various forms of drawings presented: Video drawings, color drawings, assemblage drawings, installation drawings, and even performance drawing.

We hope that this exhibition will deepen the view of drawing as a viable form of material craft, and broaden our understanding of the origins of the impulse to draw.

Artists presented are:

Jannalyn Bailey, Phillippa Beardsley, Jessica Braiterman,  Matej Branc, Gretchen Diehl
Diana Dodson,  Kirsten Fisher,  KatrinaFunk,  Eric Huckerbee,  Adam Lovits,
Ana Maria GomezLopez,  April Loveday,  Sofya Mirvis,  Cynthia Oswald, SarahPeoples,
Ana Vizcarra Rankin, Brian Spies, Susan Stromquist, Chelsea Thoumsin

Music & Mosaics: Dia de los Muertos Dance Fiesta October 15, 2011 7:00pm

This Saturday, I will be creating a site specific installation at the Philadelphia Magic Gardens on South Street. The last two installations were a great success, and this is my biggest one yet, so come and check it out if you can. There will be dancing and free sangria, or byob.

Philadelphia Magic Gardens
1020 South Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147   •   215-733-0390
Admission is $15/Members and Students, $20/Non-Members.
RSVP by calling 215-733-0390 or emailing lharkins@phillymagicgardens.org.

And this is a link to PMG's website listing http://www.phillymagicgardens.org/news/news

And my artist statement...

Sugar skulls,or calaveras de azucar in Spanish, represent the souls of the departed.
The three sided arrangement mimics the format of an altar, enveloping the viewer and referencing the trinity.
The 999 friendly skulls in the installation are created using potatoes as stamps, or relief prints, on joss paper.  Also known as ghost money, joss paper is used in traditional Asian religions as a burnt offering to deceased ancestors on holidays and special occasions. Each calavera is similar to the others, yet unique - one of a kind- in the spirit of el Dia de Los Muertos or Day of the Dead holiday, which celebrates the lives of those who have come (and gone) before us.

Site specific Installation at Philadelphia Magic Garden

Write up from the Event brochure:

About the Artist Installation

No Rain/ 365 Days of Sunshine is a temporary work constructed by artist Ana Vizcarra.  Vizcarra will create 365 drawings of the sun on joss paper and install them throughout the day within PMG’s labyrinth. The metallic components of the paper create reflections and catch light, making it appear as though they are their own source of illumination. Joss paper, also known as ghost money, is a material traditionally used in burnt offerings during traditional Chinese religious practices, including the veneration of ancestors on special occasions.

The image of the sun is universal. In the Uruguayan flag (my native country), the sun is on the upper left corner in yellows and golds with a serene face and alternating straight and curvy rays. The Uruguayan flag design was inspired by the American flag. Philadelphia’s cosmopolitan mix of cultures has been an enduring inspiration to me since my arrival in 2005. This particular work is dedicated to my late grandfather, who first explained the meaning of the Sol de Mayo (May Sun) in my country’s flag when I was four, and who I hope is enjoying plenty of sunshine in the afterlife.

Hope to see you there :)

Summertime, and the living is easy

7/26/11

  florida moon

July was a month of travelling.
First to my sister's wedding in Perdido Key, on the gulf coast of Florida; then to London to check out some artwork at Tate Modern, Whitechapel Gallery and more; finally for some relaxation and watercolors in the amazing light found in Sitges, a village south of Barcelona. Was even able to conjure some writing for my master's thesis along the way.
Highlights of the trip: seeing my sister jump into a swimming pool in her wedding dress, beating Punch and Judy with a giant fake sausage on the National Theatre grounds, drinking a glass of freshly bottled cava while watching falcons hunt prey for their young.
I wish every July could be this amazing.
It feels great to be back home and in the studio.
This weekend I will be doing a site specific installation for the second year in a row at the Philadelphia Magic Gardens- more on that later.
In the meantime, enjoy the new artwork going up on the site, and thank you to those of you who have given forever homes to some of my paintings, drawings and prints this month- you know who you are.
My gratitude for being able to do what I was put on this earth to do knows no bounds.

  Looking Good, Feeling Fine

Thank you all who voted for my work "Looking Good, Feeling Fine" in the H&M t-shirt contest, my first attempt at a contest of this type!
You made me feel loved.  I have no doubt I would have been a finalist if I had found out about it earlier.
I will investigate having t-shirts made anyway, since now i want one myself!
Also, I just uploaded some $35 drawings (includes shipping anywhere in the world) so get'em while they're fresh :)

PLENTY: a zeitgeist retablo

4/23/11

  PLENTY

This is the poster that I am circulating within the academy, for my first large installation work in the shrine series. It  up until this Friday 4/29/11 in room #810 at PAFA.
The idea began taking shape last year in ceramics class, where i built a small shrine for a broken mermaid. The new, much larger version isdone in the format of a church altarpiece, which features images of social critique.  This work in progress will hopefully lead to more related objects.  I already have dozens of images that presaged those on the retablo, and dozens more that didn't make the cut.
I will post images of the whole space in a new "installations"  gallery within this site.
