Music & Mosaics: Dia de los Muertos Dance Fiesta October 15, 2011 7:00pm

This Saturday, I will be creating a site specific installation at the Philadelphia Magic Gardens on South Street. The last two installations were a great success, and this is my biggest one yet, so come and check it out if you can. There will be dancing and free sangria, or byob.

And my artist statement...

Sugar skulls,or calaveras de azucar in Spanish, represent the souls of the departed.
The three sided arrangement mimics the format of an altar, enveloping the viewer and referencing the trinity.
The 999 friendly skulls in the installation are created using potatoes as stamps, or relief prints, on joss paper.  Also known as ghost money, joss paper is used in traditional Asian religions as a burnt offering to deceased ancestors on holidays and special occasions. Each calavera is similar to the others, yet unique - one of a kind- in the spirit of el Dia de Los Muertos or Day of the Dead holiday, which celebrates the lives of those who have come (and gone) before us.
