2007 allowed me 99 days straight in Philadelphia; the time was embraced through these 9 works inspired in the words of “BROTHERLY LOVE”
Canvasses fluid in colour and motion set the backdrop to transparently man made icons, ghostly urban architecture floats across the frame childlike in manner.
Landscapes layered with elements of graffiti, collaged in various medias, textured and informed… representations of how one keeps busy Found and shredded maps travel and tourism layers the view in hope of direction or an understanding of what has been. Mirror reflects light, while placing one self in the picture.
Seeking beauty in a urban view, a dream of unconditional love, as I move through the streets of lost souls I am troubled from what surrounds me, guns in hand and pain in heart, all these unloved children; this group of paintings represent my hope, vibrant in optimism always in search of joy.
"FINDING MY WAY HOME" 2006 produced these 10 works, simple and in search of my roots they reflect on my childhood lacking in heritage and an understanding that to have the ability to grow one must identify with where one comes from… Canvasses portray the cold Victorian ways of Christchurch Canterbury, surrounded by the hills and Alps, but in the shadowed rivers, lakes and surrounding ocean lay mythological creatures. Taniwha’s lost to me like my culture and tribe “te aitawh”. Chiefteness and moko (masks) are more playful at heart; they balance the male and female within one.
