Soundsuits

9/5/10

Soundsuits, named for the sounds made when the sculptures are worn, are as reminiscent of African and religious ceremonial costumes as they are of haute couture.  Artist Nick Cave is as interested in fashion and cultural concepts as he is in politics, a domain that has always been part of his work as demonstrated by acts of collecting and reconfiguring elements and concealing the identity, race and gender of those who wear his suits. Rendering his subjects faceless and anonymous, the suits help these individuals transcend the political realm in order to enter the realm of dreams and fantasy.

Is This Architecture?

8/19/10

American firm Choi + Shine Architects recently received the 2010 Boston Society of Architects award for unbuilt architecture for their project 'The Land of Giants', which they originally designed for the icelandic high voltage electrical pylon competition back in 2008.  Is this architecture or is it umbrellas across America again?

All Is Full of Love

8/18/10

Are we becoming so mechanistic that even the most raw of emotions must be programmed, coded, redefined, adjusted, implemented and rebuilt?  Might we become so 'full of love' without outlet, that what we know as human emotion must be 'facilitated' by some outside source?  Let me know: Emotional Mechanics at Work

Planting the Seed

8/3/10

'Art Meets Science' will examine creativity as a birthright.  Products from this initiative will equate to a 'dual heritage' in the arts and sciences. It is expected that a multicultural code of communication will be achieved, whereby artists and scientists have a platform to enhance their creativity. It is a place where the seeds of collaboration will be allowed to germinate, as was also recognized in an October 2009 initiative at York University Toronto When Worlds Collaborate

GET OFF MY LAND?

8/3/10

With respect to innovations in the arts and sciences, boundaries which once defined the disciplines are increasingly more fluid. Today it appears that developments in science and industry are largely 'improvisational' and the rapidity with which interdisciplinary ideas are exchanged is unmatched in our history.   That said, it is the totality of theme and composition which deserve examination with the 'Art Meets Science' initiative.

Art Meets Science from the Royal Society of Chemistry

8/1/10

The Visual Elements Periodic Table created by chemsoc (the Royal Society of Chemistry) is a wonderful example of Art Meets Science. (For best results, Flash is required, however an html version is available). The site is chock full of amazing facts and information with stunning graphics and even music. Take your time and look around. And while you're in the neighborhood, don't miss the chemsoc Timeline, a visual exploration of key events in the history of science with particular emphasis on chemistry.

Arts Collide is a gesture of commitment to humanity and a plea for unity.  Marginalized voices working in isolation within the disciplines have an opportunity in San Diego for polite engagement and a demonstration of respectful representation within the arts and science communities.  A special thanks to Terry Williams, PhD for his tireless devotion to the arts and sciences and his personal interest in this effort.
