| | | So happy were her parents when their daughter was born, that rather than choose a name from their native Dutch, her father went to a French language dictionary for the perfect name for her. He named her “Caresse” and he sent out announcements of her birth to 50 heads of state worldwide. Now, more than 35 years later, Caresse who works out of her studio in Corrales is attracting local, national and international attention again – through her vibrant paintings of the female form.
The road from Huizen in the Netherlands to Corrales, New Mexico, has been as filled with curves as the sensuous lines of the women she presents–through Europe and back and forth to her homeland many times, but with most time in Mexico, before eventually settling in New Mexico. The Netherlands, she says, is a strict country, a land of rules and constraints and a lot of grey rainy days. “Even as a young girl, I knew that there must be something totally different . . . “ and it was that seeking that led her to the warmth of the land and people of Mexico, and the qualities that are so richly expressed in the lines and colors of her evocative work. In Guadalajara and later in Albuquerque, Caresse studied sculpture and also worked in clay -- contributing to the flowing sculptural qualities that are suggested in her paintings
Caresse’s work has been shown at The San Miguel Studio, Corrales studio tour, The Julianna Kirwin Gallery, and The Brigitte Brüggeman Gallery in Santa Fe. Work is currently showing at the Third Moon Gallery in Corrales, The Range Café in Bernalillo and Patrician Design in Albuquerque. | | 1 comment | Post comment
