Flying House

3/31/12

I'm excited to announce that I've been selected to be a Flying House artist this year!!!

Each year, Flying House selects 5 artists and 5 writers (this year there are 6 each!) from across the country, pairs them up and gives them 6 months to collaborate. ... Each pair will create a written work(s) and visual work(s) which will be published in an anthology. At the end of the 6 months there will also be a huge gallery show (Chicago area) where the artwork from the 6 artists will be displayed and the 6 writers will read exerts from their works.

I've been paired up with an amazing writer, Richard Thomas, and it already feels like great things are in the works for this project! We have a month to chat and come up with our plan of attack... at this point I have no idea what is going to happen, but I'm overcome with positive energy and the desire to create, what will undoubtedly be, my best work to date.

Painting is such a solitary act (at least for me) ... and writing is such a solitary act ... what will happen when the two must work together? This project isn't "paint something inspired by this artwork" or "write something about this artwork"  it's visual art and writing being born together !!
... awesome things are afoot!

New Year, New Art!

1/17/12

I hope your new year is off to a great start! Things are off and running here in my studio; I've completed my first painting of the year, "the Fortune Teller." Pictured is close up shot of part of the piece (full painting can be seen here). I'm excited to kick off the year with a more thought-provoking piece. I always say January paintings are for me because I've just come out of the busy part of my year for commissions in Nov-Dec., so in January I'm able to get back to working on things that have been stewing in my head for quite some time :)
... now it's back to work for me! Painting #2 of the new year is already in the works :)
