Mask -u-line Mask -u-line
For the  “Mask Project”  I worked with a variety of natural and man made materials. Each mask is an original piece of art and completely handmade. The masks are hand formed and sculpted of polymer clay. The wonderful sculptural properties of this medium allow me to create complex facial features and expressions. They are then heat cured, hand sanded, polished, stained, back carved and sometimes painted. Many of the pieces are also adorned with natural materials (feathers, hemp, dried leaves), man made items (beads, wire, fabric), and found objects.

The inspiration for these pieces is my natural curiosity of peoples, places and history. My travel memories and studies of the past have led me to sculpt these little treasures of lives lived long ago.

We know that almost every society throughout history used masks. Masks served many purposes, but the most important seem to have been for protection, to give strength, and to transform. The rituals, rules, and ceremonies surrounding the mask are rich and varied throughout the world. The mask continues to hold mystery and magic even today. My masks are made in response to that mystery. Each Mask is a numbered original.
Contact me if you would like to commission a miniature mask.
