An up and coming local artist, David Phillips is making his presence felt in Roanoke and the surrounding area. He is not a writer or speaker, and his chosen way to communicate with the world has always been through his hands.
The Richmond Virginia-born artist says that he is inspired by the Blue Ridge mountains, study of Art history and the years he has traveled the globe as a career Naval Officer. He is inspired by the shapes and colors of nature. In his early adult years, living in Roanoke Virginia, he worked as a landscape architect changing the shape, texture and color of an area with landscape designs. He studied at Radford University in Virginia, and earned his Masters in Art. As a graduate assistant to the Art department, he mastered virtually all aspects of art from ceramics, goldsmithing, lithography, painting and sculpture.
For David - Shapes and colors influence adjoining spaces or environments, whether 2D or 3D, as each has a different feel or essence. When creating, he acknowledges the limitations of 2D or 3D. Both techniques occupy space, just in different ways. His use of color and form brings a strong presence to his work. Time and material hold physical limitations for him and he works through the media tirelessly, seeking the image and concept he wishes to portray. His Art is not the slick, sensational, and modish type of work. Perfection is boring so he likes to leave the hand of the maker in his work.
David has always studied the images of the female figure. To him, they are mysterious and yet comforting. Women are the creators and comforters of mankind. Having no children, his offspring are his paintings and sculptures. He is driven to create and at times the drive is so intense that he will create a torment of work until he is exhausted.
One can usually find him working 7 days a week in his studio.
David has been published in Florida Design, BRITE magazine, Florida Travel and Life and has shown extensively at Avalon Gallery in Orlando Fl and also Maitland Art Center, and various Art Galleries.
