~James Joyce

What is
THIS moment like when I experience it without a story? Without checking with
mind about what anything means or doesn't mean? Without going into past or
future? Without trying to understand or get anything? What is the storyless NOW
like? Only one way to find out...

1/23/12 "All conflict comes
from attachment."
–Anthony de Mello
Once, meandering through Connemara, County Galway, Ireland, I was making
my way along the lake shore near Kylemore Abbey. This little boat was
tugging at its tethered line and it reminded me of how we are all
"attached" to our thoughts, our home, our possessions and how we really
become those thoughts in our own individual way. I suppose true happiness is causeless. It occurred
to me that if something causes me happiness, I will become attached and possessive of
that thing. I will become anxious, lest I lose it.
If I ask the mystic
why he or she is happy, the answer will be,
‘why not?’

We begin life with the world presenting itself to us as it is. Someone -
our parents, teachers, analysts - hypnotizes us to "see" the world and
construe it in the "right" way. These others label the world, attach
names and give voices to the beings and events in it, so that
thereafter, we cannot read the world in any other language or hear it
saying other things to us. The task is to break the hypnotic spell, so
that we become undeaf, unblind and multilingual, thereby letting the
world speak to us in new voices and write all its possible meanings in
the new book of our existence. Be careful in your choice of
hypnotists.

1/17/12 “Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then
subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to
work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is
inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is.
Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the
promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being "in
love" which any of us can convince ourselves we are. Love itself is what
is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an
art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it, we had roots
that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty
blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and
not two.”

Louis de Bernières,

Maybe I’ll be older and smarter and just plain better. If that happens,
that’s when I’ll deserve you. But now, at this moment, you can’t hook
