About

Francois began a journey into art with an oil painting course he took in 1974. After a 26 year lapse- hey, we all have times like that, he returned to art using the pastel medium.
He uses hard and soft pastels on Wallis sanded paper. He likes to paint en plein aire (on site)  and can be seen quite often in the Portsmouth, NH area.
A lifelong photographer, many of his scenes have a photographic composition to them.

He likes the option of "artistic license" to put or delete any part of the scene. Francois is a member of the Pastel Painters of Maine.

Painting "The Cooper" on-site.

Francois lives with his wife, Cindel, in Wells, Maine.

Francois Lamothe is an folk artist who  uses a style reminiscent of Maurice Utrillo, the French Impressionist. His pastel urban scenes and seacoast paintings evoke a simpler life.
He likes to say his pastel impressions take the hard edge off reality -without Vallium!
