I’m a native New
Yorker, raised throughout the City of New York (Harlem , Queens, and Brooklyn.) The period of the 80's and 90's in
New York City has shaped my existence. The artistic revolution of "Hip
Hop" is the pivotal influence of my creative approach. The advent of “Hip
Hop” brought in a culture not just a music genre. One expression that embodies the
jazz, soul, movies, consciousness, money, poverty, clothing, graffiti,
language, and the brand” New York City” that defines the modern world of today.
The city itself is a part of the people. The beggars, the criminals, the
police, the drugs, and the hard working families. The projects, the skyscrapers,
the brownstones, the alleys, the concrete, the tar, the trees, bricks, parks,
bridges, and tunnels.
The city is a
melting pot. Forming a hybrid culture everyone takes from another while still
claiming the purity of their own culture. Cultures clash and bring about
heightened awareness for unity, or respect of the close knit lines of
separation. All these happenings whether they are positive or negative lend to
the effect of the environment. In my work, my aim is to capture these silent
feelings and give definition to them. I paint what we feel……….I take the atmosphere
of the urban ghettos and interpret the emotions around it. The reality of urban
centers around the world where, oppression forces genius and resilience out of
the people.
Its
time we really begin to see the great changes happening all around us. The
world is in a building frenzy. Buildings are a perfect symbol of the people
that occupy them; the world
we live in today. Modern culture is @
the apex of great changes in humanity.
My urban brand captures the mind of our era and the brilliant past that
pushed us to this point.
My
work is framed by three definitional concepts:
URBAN:
progress, motion, social arenas of modern society and the highest material
expression of man’s dominion.
MODERNIST: one who is
in tune, in accord and shapes the culture of now. Ushering in the culture of
tomorrow.
ARTIST: creator,
innovator, author. An individual expressionist encompassing the expression of
the whole.
My
connection and affection toward art is driven by color. My work is giving form
to the unseen yet ever present effect of our surroundings. I pay homage to modern culture on a visual
surreal platform. Each piece is created with an inspiration that I must fulfill
and wrestle with to accomplish. The challenges of my life however real or
delusional are imbedded in every color, shape, and form. When you view my work
stop, and listen for the voice in my work.
My
art is the brand of my life. I’m the conduit of this form and I give it
willingly.
