| | Many years ago I had the privilege of meeting Millard Sheets, the famous California artist who was a driving force of the watercolor movement. I expressed to Mr. Sheets my interest in becoming an artist and sought his advice on how to proceed. His words to me were, "just paint and love it." So that is what I have done.
I have been painting for over ten years and have studied under many well known artists: Tom Lynch, Christopher Schink, Don Andrews and Frank Webb, to name a few. But, the most important teacher has been my mother. Her artistic ability surpassed nearly everyone. She taught me balance, symmetry, composition and how to be creative with color. My mother also taught me to "break rules" in order to make something more interesting and pleasing to the eye. Mom lost her battle to breast cancer, and I am committed to keeping her spirit alive through my artwork.
The question is asked of me: Why do I paint? Simply stated, it is my escape. I equate it to a type of meditation or relaxation technique, and it is a somewhat selfish endeavor. I paint a variety of subject matter and my inspiration comes from the objects and images I see in everyday life. I am starting to become interested in landscapes and draw from scenes near my home in Northern California, particularly Sonoma and Humboldt Counties. I also have a special interest and goal to paint golf courses, so keep checking this site for my newest creations! |
