I’m a Seattle native, born and raised. I was the “weird” one in my family that drew
and painted all the time.
After high school I worked blue-collar jobs and still managed to draw and paint.
I finally went to art school and finished up classes in art direction, design and
illustration at what was then known as The New School of Visual Concepts
(now SVC). I even went on to teach "conceptual illustration" there for a number
of years.
Over the next ten plus years I freelanced illustration for clients ranging from
commercial to editorial.
One client liked the thinking that went into my illustrations and hired me as
an art director. The agency was Floathe Johnson and they had a niche in
technology. Their client list included Attachmate, Hewlett Packard, Emerald
Technology and Huntron. These companies had products that ranged from
LaserJet printers to terminal emulators. I could easily figure out how to
work with a team to tell a compelling story and create a preference for
LaserJet printers, but understanding and communicating what a chip router
or a terminal emulator were, could be a challenge. It was a challenge that I
enjoyed for five years.
Since moving on in the business and working for a number of agencies my
goal has always been the same; client success. Whether I’m doing an
animated TV spot for Starbucks, an ad pointing out what to look for in a
blood glucose meter or collateral for dairy products, working with a team to
develop a simple compelling story that maintains the brand has always been
the best way to achieve that goal.
