Suzanne McClelland: A Heap of Greens

I’ve been looking at Suzanne McClelland’s work for some time now ever since I saw her featured in a magazine. I love to look at other artists work to learn about their techniques and inspirations. I love the looseness of her strokes and how it seems like they were so fearlessly put on the canvas. One of the hardest and most exciting things for me as an artist is to have a blank canvas in front of me, ready to start a painting. I think that being timid when starting a painting can cause the painting to be a failure. Otherwise, you’re not loose which means you’re probably unable to be free to let your creative juices flow.

I know that this particular piece is of a landscape. I adore her use of color and type in this photo and how it carries your eye from the bottom left to the top right. From a distance, it looks like it could be a normal painting of a landscape, but when you look closer, you see the complexities and the use of collage. What I love most about this painting is that she took such a simple topic as a landscape and created something so original and unique out of it. The landscape becomes an idea based on how she views the world. The idea of taking something so straightforward and creating a conversation about it is something that really interests me.
