KRISTIN V.N. GAMBELL: BIO

BFA Photography - Massachusetts College of Art 1999

Growing up in Boston, I was exposed to many aspects of art and culture at a young age. I had the opportunity in my college years to both volunteer and study abroad. My creative passion stems from these initial experiences and is reflected in my work.

STATEMENT:

Traditionally, photograms are a black and white contact print made using objects found in nature such as leaves. They are made by placing something opaque or translucent on light sensitive material and then exposing it to light. I have taken this process several steps further by creating a collage on glass that replaces a traditional negative in the photo printing process. This work does not involve a camera and is non-digital.

I have always been fascinated by the quality of light that translucent objects emit. I found the intense textures and colors that this process produced to be captivating and have evolved it.
