New vantage point...
New vantage point... 7/15/08

Someone remarked on a blog that it is time for me to spread my wings... that I have. Let's start with the music...

I began my venture into the music world fresh and full or hope. I met MANY musicians and songwriters and immersed myself in a world of my favorite music and friends. I realized two major things, I wasn't willing to work 12 hour days for the promise of little in return and also... I wasn't willing to be broke forever. That being said, I love to sing. Anyone who knows me, knows that that is something that will never change in me. I will always sing.. I want to sing because I LOVE it... I don't want to develop distain for the one thing in life that was more mine than anything I had ever loved in life. My voice was something I shared with people that meant the world to me. I am not sure that that is what I want to turn into a job.
SO. I sign every single day.. not professionally. This taught me something that I REALLY needed to learn more than I ever needed to sing in public.

I learned that I am really good at a large list of things, some of which will make me more that enough money.

I have learned that I am a great dancer, I can take a wickedly artistic and dynamic photograph and I am highly inventive. The inventive part is still under way and could make me a large enough sum of money that I would realize many of my dreams.

I am not a typical singer. It is a passion for me. Personal. I am not looking for fame with it.. Not right now... It is mine. The one thing that I will always have. I want to make money... at something else. I have found... I have a many things to choose from.

While I was immersing myself in music, musicians and friends, I learned lindy-hop, balboa, shag, charleston, swing, tandem charleston, triple-step swing, jitterbug and slow partner dancing (blues style). I learned them well enough to begin teaching with Milwaukee's most talented and educated dancer. She offered me a position teaching with her. This has been something that has made me happier that I can even tell you. Along with shedding emotional weight and physical weight, I am in better shape and I get to teach a room full of 80-100 people who love to dance. I share the music that I love most with these people. I DJ as well and pick the cream of the crop to share and dance to. I have the pleasure of dancing several days a week, hold dances several times a month and make my living doing it.

The most interesting thing that I have begun recently that is overtaking my spare moments... is my love of photography. I began with a private lesson with a local artist that has been professional for at least the last 15 years. In one hour, he showed my things on my camera, settings, cropping and options that will change the shape of my photography from here on out.

I have been putting ideas into the universe and realizing them with unbelievable turn around time. I met a professional photographer that took the photos for Seinfeld, Baywatch, Summerfest and work for Playboy. He is from LA and has many many more famous credits to his name. He told me of a galley where he shows his work and it lead me to a man who introduced me to COPA. This is a local photography artists guild in Milwaukee. People from all areas and levels meet to talk about and work on photography.. each other's and their own.

I have two books completed and I am beginning to sell... This is the newest and most exciting of my directions..

Swingin'!
Swingin'! 12/10/07

Swingin' in the snow. Well, WI certainly isn't devoid of activities in the snow. People are skating on the pond near my house... The thin ice sign clearly posted... Moving back to WI was the hardest thing I have ever had to do.. for may reasons. It has turned out to be good... but the weather can truly wear you out.

My DOG on the other hand thinks that this new world is wicked. She romps... chases imaginary snow "balls". Does zip lines in the snow and flies past me just missing me in a rotating fashion that nearly puts me into the snow every time.

Music... right. Well, music has taken a different path for right now. I have many offers to jam, wonderful.. but I am truly taken with dancing right now! I have become confident and am now teaching... interesting where one interest will lead another. Same era of music.. In fact. I am exposed to so much more music than I would have been otherwise. I have met amazing musicians that have asked me to join their band for a song or two repeatedly!!! An honor. Chicago artists that have been in the industry for decades are happy to sing and play with me. I love it. I have the best of both worlds. I am making a living on the dance and getting to sing without the pressure of having to make money at it.

Happy Holidays to everyone everywhere. To my friends in the service in Manila, be safe.. I think of you often. Friends in Alaska, CA, Arizona.. to all of you.. I miss you. Be well. My all of your dreams be realized and happiness reach your hearts. I love you all!! See you in the new year. Who KNOWS what it will bring!!!

Cheers,
Logan

The Midwest
The Midwest 4/12/07

Well.. it certainly has been a while... getting adjusted was.. not easy.. Ia m still not altogether there.. I don't think I ever will be. Truth is.... I really am not meant to be in a cold climate.. I am terrible at it. I go into a funk. Truth is.. so does everyone else here except the ones who own plows... yeah..

So.. singing.. well, lately I am having a little fun exploring new avenues. Karaoke. Right... silly huh? Well.. I have won money twice at it in the last month.. the only two times I decided to compete.. it was really actually quite fun. I just sang a handful of the jazz standards.. maybe a little Bonnie Raitt and a Grease duet.. It was hillarious.. I didn't expect to win.. but hey!

I have dicovered something that ebarasses me as a singing.. so naturally I am going to add it in my blog. I have been singing since I was little... I never really learned to read music.. at all. I even played an instrument for two years.. nope.. nothing stuck. I have to go back to square one! My granfather is helping me with a list of about 12 songs to come up with the keys that fit me most appropriately... but it is really interesting, to say the least, that I never learned this. I have always been accompanied by a trained accompanist that knew what keys would be best for me instinctually. I am not sure that I ever even thougth about it once. If it was too high or low I simply said so and it was changed on the spot. Simple. Well... now, when I want to go and sing with a band or a vocalist invites me to sing with her and asks me my key(s).. I am in deep trouble. It is mortiying. I can sing anything I hear once all the way through.. but if you put a chart in front of me... it looks farmiliar.. but I have no real idea how to read it. This would be a MAJOR part of my career...

So.. I am off to figure this out and keep moving.. the karaoke is fun.. but I want more... much much more than that.. I have to admit the weather is certainly slowing everything down around here... but I think it will lift soon. I need the sun... I miss Cali.. more than I can say...

Life
Life 12/5/06

As the winter comes and California cools.. I find myself missing the snowy mornings of the midwest... I think I will have to go back to the cold winter's of Wisconsin for a while, if only to remind myself why I left those crazy winter's in the first place.

I plan to be back for a little while... Music is unsually abundant in Milwaukee right now and Chicago is HOT depite the snow.. I am anxious to immerse myself in the beat of the city. The midwest has a tempo unto intself.. I am long to feel it again.. even if only for a while..

I suppose sometimes... we all have to reutn to our roots... You have to know where you are from.. to know where the hell you are going..

Peace to everyone this season.. Peace to our troops and love to all.. Bless everyone.. no exceptions...
Happy Holidays my friends.. Cali.. wait for me.. I'll be back soon..

Current Project
Current Project 11/18/06

And the real work begins. Gathering songs, sheet music, lyrics, versions. Choosing keys and temos. Back-up vocals or no... I am in the thick of it. Wonderful. This is what I am meant to do...

My current song list includes many traditionals such as:

Stormy Monday
At Last
Smile
What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life
...
and many other's that are not as well known to round out the cd.
If anyone has any suggestions of thier favorite vintage songs... I would love new material and it would be great to sink my teeth into something new and challenging!! Drop me and e-mail or leave a comment!

I love Stormy Monday so much. Eva Cassidy has such a fan-freakin'-tabulous version of it. I can't wait to hear yours!!

Transformation
Transformation 11/8/06

Well.. It is interesting to me what can happen when it is time to really change things... In a month's time I have gotten two tattoos, had my first pedicure ( that was amazing!! lol) and gotten an entirely new hair style. It is a 50's cut with the versatility of a more modern and hip style. I like the blend between the two and I can't wait to play with it.
I like the image I am creating. It feels like me. Like I have always felt, but no one ever knew...

Working on that picture of the new do... Just a little camera shy...

L.A.
L.A. 10/31/06

In a few weeks I am planning on heading to L.A!! I will be staying with some friends that are talented musicians. They have a great site http://home.earthlink.net/~ra-musicworks/. Go check them out!!!

I am more excited than I can say... They are interested in many of the same styles of music that I love. We plan to have a great jam session for a while and possibly record some stuff, too! I have a list of several songs that have great meaning in my life and have the sound I want to produce.
I am thrilled to be working with Adriane and Roland. Having met Adriane and heard a lot about Roland, they sound like and unbeatable team that love music as much as I do. This is the first step into my music....
Wish me luck and keep me in your thoughts. Here I go... finally.

I cannot wait to hear some of the songs you'll be working on! Someday, you and I will hopefully get a chance to sing together - just us. I'm greatly anticipating it! Love you so much, Steph!
