Collage Portraits:
The portraits are combinations of quirky features of family, friends and my self to create new fictional characters. I tried to emphasize these features in a humorous way. Several people who have viewed these portraits have sworn a particular character is a friend or relative of theirs. My cast of characters are purely fictional, any resemblance to your Aunt Mary is purely coincidental. As a mixed media artist I love playing with surfaces on which to paint. Many of the portraits began as multilayered collages with hand painted papers. This created a bumpy texture different from the smooth surface of a canvas. In many cases, the final painting is oil.
Collage
My love of texture continues with collages inspired by my travels. More than the architecture and monuments, people and their everyday activities continue to inspire me.
Plaster Armature
For my work in plaster I used a plaster impregnated gauze similiar to material used for casts when you break a limb. I then added additional fabrics and found objects to add additional texture. Oil sticks used in the final step. I have use wood, rug backing, burlap and masonite for substraits so as I could make the pieces larger.
Painting
Most of my paintings are on paper. One of my favorite summertime activities is to put 6 large pieces of paper out on the lawn and throw some paint, mixed with medium, then move the paper until I am satisfied. Often I will complete the painting with oil sticks.
