Compitions - Digital Arts California

5/23/12

The reason this award ment so much to me was the standard of judges.
Any Digital Artists out there you should strongly consider entering with these guys.  Look at who the judges are!!  This is a direct copy and paste from thier site.

Jurors
Selection of the finalists that will appear online in solo artist/photographer galleries will be made by Virginia Christensen and Glen Christensen. Virginia has enjoyed a long career as an editor and a publisher of photography and art books, and is, herself, an accomplished photographer. Glen has had a distinguished career as Art Director at major record companies in both New York City and Hollywood. Among his professional accolades have been two Grammy nominations for Best Album Package. To learn more about the backgrounds of Virginia and Glen, see the “About” section of this website.
About the Directors of Digital Arts: California
Founder/Director Virginia Christensen has a long history editing and publishing books on art, photography, and design. She is, herself, an accomplished photographer.

She founded Design Press International, which developed and co-published professional design books. Prior to that, she served as Executive Editor of PBC international, a worldwide publisher of books on graphic, interior, and merchandizing design.

Virginia also worked as an Editor for the American Photographic Book Publishing Company (Amphoto), which published both technical and fine-arts photography books. There, she served as Associate Editor of the 14-volume Kodak Encyclopedia of  Practical Photography, a nominee for the prestigious Carey-Thomas Award.

She has also edited books on art and design for England’s Quarto Publishers and the American publishers Rockport and Watson Guptill.

Her goal, in creating Digital Arts: California, is to connect digital artists with art curators, patrons and collectors by establishing venues—both online and in physical galleries—that present, on an ongoing basis, some of the finest, juried digital art from around the world.

Exhibit Director Glen Christensen was, for many years, a major figure in graphic design in the music industry, where he worked as Art Director for Buddah Records, Elektra/Asylum Records, and 20th Century Fox Records. He was twice nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Album Package: for the Carly Simon album Playing Possum and the Joni Mitchell albumHejira.

Glen later founded Glen Christensen Design on Hollywood’s Sunset Strip, where he continued to provide creative design for the entertainment industry, as well as for nonprofit organizations, including the California  Community Foundation.

Digital Arts California - True Colors Award

5/23/12

This is what Digital Arts California said...

DIGITAL ARTS: CALIFORNIA provides a unique “dual” showcase (online AND in a physical gallery) that brings attention to artists’ and photographers’ work at a time when the Internet is awash in art. Our approach also aids art curators, collectors, and patrons by presenting art and photographic works that have been distinguished by art experts through jurying. Beyond serving as a showcase, DIGITAL ARTS: CALIFORNIA also endeavors to further the recognition of digital arts as fine art. Digital arts is a unique and compelling art form with dynamic powers of expression. It covers an extreme range of color, form, dimension, and visual intensity. And, it is clearly an art form of now…and of the future. For our exhibits we use the broadest definition of “digital art”: any work whose creation or presentation involves a digital process. While this definition may sound tame, consider some images that are “digital art”: a traditionally composed, representational photograph rich with shadows and texture…a vibrantly colored fractal, with repetition of color and pattern, that expresses a complex mathematical equation…a traditional drawing rendered with depth and complexity on an electronic tablet…a “glitch” work comprised of digital errors. Digital art is nothing if not exciting and wildly innovative. We invite all those involved in the creation—or appreciation—of digital art worldwide to join us as we uncover some of the most exceptional digital art and photography, and present it for the same reasons all art is presented: enjoyment, education, expression, awakening.

ArtSlant award win!

5/22/12

Mind Games won ArtSlant 3rd 2012 Showcase award!
"...The ArtSlant Curatorial Team is very pleased to welcome you into our special group of winning artists".

I don't normally post about wins but I probably should, as they can be encouraging.

I've written before about wins and awards and what I like about this and Digital Arts California is the standard of judges.  This to me means something when people who know their stuff dig my award.  Everyone likes a gold star now and then but when you know that it’s been extremely competitive and judged by experts then it does puff ones chest up and feel a little proud.  My artworks are a weird part of me yet in a way I look at them as being some how separate once they have been created.  This way I can comment, criticize, analyze and well step back from them to see how as an artist I can improve.

I have won this award before with the Love I artwork.  Love I also won another award according to the judges in record time, as the statistics of winning it were astounding.  Must dig up that email and post it just to point out to others how hard it can be being an artist and just getting your art seen let alone awarded.  The other award was MyArtSpace.  I forget the name.  That award encouraged me to put forward Love I.  I do find these awards useful in sorting out what particular artworks I might put forward if there is a choice to be made.

So spurred on I have sent of applications for shows in diverse places a plenty.  Everywhere from Marocco, UK, Canada to USA!  Wish me luck that my art is welcomed.  :)

I know to enjoy the successes and remember them when the times are hard as the road is unknown and ever changing.

Enough of my philosophizing!  So grateful, so very grateful!

Life is short, so create and enjoy!

Twitter & Tumblr

5/16/12

Well here I go I’m now on Twitter.  Yes I’ve had a Twitter account for a while but now I’m actually using it.  Still a little sure as to how valuable a contribution to the world Twitter really is but we shall see.  You can follow my Tweets on the link bellow.

I’m also now a part of Tumbler.  This is also a new one on me.  It is quite an interesting way to show off my art to the world.  It is so fantastic to see how many people love my work and those that re-post my artworks to their walls.   Another wonderful part of this community is I also get to experience lots of different forms of art.  I really feel this is important to see what art is being created around the world.  I’m looking forward to learning more about this new social media.  There does seem to be so many choices out there as to how and where I share my art.  The feedback I’m getting and the awesome number of hits to this website is so encouraging.  I thank you all for your beautiful comments and messages.  I have so much art that is not online your feedback helps me decide what artworks are promoted.

Sneeze!

5/9/12

Well it’s been a while since my last bog.  Probably a good thing as I’ve been a little unwell.  It was nothing serious just a cold.  I normally don’t get colds so when I do they knock me over for a while.  One interesting observation I made was how my mind was still full of creativity yet I was unable to do anything about it.  This was so frustrating.  The whole time I was sick I only did one little very basic drawing.  Looking at the drawing now it’s not very good.

I tell myself I’m not a machine so I should not be so hard on myself but really life is so very short we are all given opportunities in this life that need to be explored.  Every day is a crossroad.

I did make a bit of a mistake.  Ok a couple of them but one well was replying to an email from an overseas gallery and I forgot the spell checker!  So embarrassing!  I do hope they look more at my art and less at the spelling errors and the bad grammar.

I’m pretty much over my cold.  Yet I can’t hear properly and am still very snuffle so I sound a bit weird and I’m not sure how loud I am.

I suppose this is the same with art.  I often wonder if sometimes my art is not just a little to loud.  I have noticed a lot of art in Melbourne is made up of softer colours.  Almost gray tones seem to prevail.  Is this the esthetic that resonates with people?  Isn’t wearing black all year round enough for Melbourne-ites?  Try to live a little and  explore the colours and textures outside your normal horizon people.  What do you have to loose?

When was the last time you thought about topics and issues outside your comfort zone?  Yes people expand your mind.  Find the common ground with those you see as being so vastly different.  Art can do this.  Ok preaching over!

Thanks largely to social media I’m in contact with other artists from around the world.  This has broadened my understanding of what their world is like.  I am so much richer for these exchanges.  I’ll talk more about possible collaborations latter but it’s interesting how different we all think we are yet at the end of the day all people really want is to be happy.

What 5 teeth would you like?

4/29/12

Asking me to choose five artworks that sum up my art practice is like asking me to choose five of my favorite teeth!  I rather like all of them thanks very much. :)
Yes it’s always a difficulty to choose what artworks to submit to art gallery and competitions.  What messages and points do I want to make?  Will I be pushing it if I submit something a bit loaded and waste an entry fee?  Who is judging and making the selection?  That’s a big one, who is judging my artworks?  Although sometimes reading up on the judges can be a bit intimidating when they have a long art history and obviously know their stuff.  It can mean the difference between me entering or not.  If the judges are high quality then being accepted means something the same if I am not accepted.  Because when you are turned down by some one who is esteemed I often smile and think well wow this person actually saw my art.

Then there is the artist statement.  Trying to fit into a small paragraph what points being made, what the influences and sometimes the processes used is hard when your not in a writing head space.  I find if time allows I give a bit of a gap between my first choice and the submission.  Having friends/supporters who give feedback helps the task immensely.

I have been completely floored at times by what art resonates and sometimes what does not.  I am currently considering removing a lot of my artworks from this site so that my core practice is more clearly highlighted.

When I think of the great artists I adore how many of their artworks are remembered?  They would have produced so many artworks yet we the masses only really know them for thier most celibrated works.  Do a Google on an artist you like, you will see there is normally so much more to them than just that one artwork or medium.

I think one of the most liberating tools for the growth of art is the Web.
You don’t have to go to a gallery to experience art.  There you are sitting out in web land reading this experiencing my art in the comfy chair with good music blaring away.  This to me is how all art should be, available for everyone to see.  So thank you I am greatful for your visits to this site and for the comments.

Like Mark Twain said "I can go for months on a good compliment" so thank you everyone. :)

Thank U :)

A new week starts...

4/22/12

Well a new week is about to begin.  What does it have in store for me?  What follies wait?  I’m currently working on a new series while trying to balance everything else that’s contending for my attention.
I’ve been adding new artworks to this site and I hope you enjoy them.  If you would like to see more of a particular type please let me know as I do have quite a bit of art that’s never been seen.  It’s always hard to choose what gets presented and what stays hidden.

Everyone out there in web land I hope you have a fantastic week.

Thanks for taking the time to look at my site.  :)

What do you see?

4/16/12

I was listening to a talk the other day about how we see art.  That in time artists can see images in front of them in whole new ways.  Not just noticing the little differences in details but that the eye picks up and traces the new lines.  So I thought I would put this artwork up in my blog.

What do you see when you look at it?
I see two people dancing. One leading and one following.  The lead dancer is dipping the follower.
There is a real 3D element to this artwork.  There is a gloss over the whole artwork like a plastic wrap, waiting to be opened.

The more time you spend looking at it the more details you should be able to pick out.  It should not be hard to see clearly a leader and a follower.

Let me know if you can't.  :)
