I enrolled at the Atlanta College of Art in 1987 to develop illustrations for The Adventures of Martho, a tale that was published in the Metro Atlanta Community Bulletin Newspaper ( bi-weekly ). My path took a very different route..........
Xavier Carter
" He who is in love is wise and becoming
wiser, sees newly every time he looks at the object beloved, drawing from it
with his eyes and his mind those virtues which it possesses." –Emerson.
The unique light and colors of his native Georgia
seem to produce metamorphosis in the Art of Xavier Carter. Pollockian storm troopers
explode from light that pierces the forest canopy. Giants wade through narrow
channels in coastal mist. The overlay of
oil and pastel on digitally manipulation, juxtaposes the natural and the
supernatural in landscapes whose waters lap at the shores of surrealism.
He studied drawing, electronic media, photography, and
printmaking at The Atlanta College
of Art. While there, he found that using
the electronic medium, he could combine all of these processes into single
cohesive works. Influences from European impressionism and the American Avant Garde are redolent in the montage of images and choice of pallets. Using the computer as
his paintbrush he uses it to apply layers upon layers of color, imagery and
depth. Finally the piece is brought to life with overlays of oil and oil
pastel. Sometimes the process is repeated many times until he is satisfied he
has drawn, from the subject, the qualities he wishes to display.
“It’s all about light and color. I use all the media but I am
focusing on how each image will affect the whole. Whether I select a previously created image or
create a new one; whether I apply it
directly to the canvas or montage it in the computer is not important. What is
important is that, I see effects of
light, of color, of form - qualities that speak to my overall vision
of a piece. Then I combine them to make
something new, something unique, with its own voice, its own life.” X.Carter, Atlanta, 2007.
