The human body has been dissected, diagramed, mapped and charted. Order has been created, and relationships have been assumed in an
attempt to explain anatomical, biological, genetic and psychological function
and pathology. While a majority of our current understanding of the human body
is the result of scientific inquiry and research supported by ethical methodology, much of our knowledge of the human body is the result of a long
tradition of trial and error often though barbaric and inhumane means.
Unfortunately, many of these errors remain unidentified and are the result of devious and malicious
intentions to exploit the sciences, a community's vulnerability, and the personal experience of faith.
My work deals with the contemporary climate of science, medicine and religion. Faux scientific theories are
presented using graphics, figurative sculpture, and video in an attempt to illustrate the human
condition. The theory and physiology presented in the work is bogus and
fictional. The content of these dubious theories is a result of appropriation
from such unempirical sources as phrenology, palmistry, and astrology combined
with theology, juvenile humor and icons of pop culture.
The primary intention of my work is to subvert the physiology, psychology and anatomy of the subject in an examination of the intentions of our medical and religious practices. By placing the body in a variety of different scenarios, and by adorning the body with imagery, iconography and text I create a narrative that expresses the human condition outside the paradigm of science and religion.
