La tela del cultura de Cuba

(The fabric of Cuba)

It’s the people of Cuba that defined my experience. Not knowing what to expect, I studied the country’s early origins, history, politics, and the importance which the United States played and continues to play in Cuba over the past 70+ years.

Armed with common misconceptions, I boarded a charted flight from Miami to Habana (not Havana) this past March.

From there my adventure began. I can say at this time, I will return to this country humbled by its people so beautiful, so hopeful and so resilient. They live with so little, and here with so much we complain about everything. Cubans have a common pride, warmth and perseverance that is admirable.

The exhibit will focus on its people, from the young to the old presenting their expressions, the hope of the youth as well as the weathered expressions of age. To accentuate this focus is also the decay of the city, and the hardships endured by villagers outside of Habana.

Transportation is also a key element highlighting their existence. Cuba, as we understand it, has the 50’s cars, but few know the back story to the preservation of these relics. I will present perhaps a single collage of cars in B&W.

My solo exhibit will run for two weeks in late November at the La Jolla Art Association Gallery, and will consist of 30 images.

There is a selection of the images in B&W because in B&W they take on a new meaning and intensity but I’m torn because the colors of Cuba are important. Some are vivid colors; however the worn colors and the crumbling buildings which at one time reflected the gaiety of an era long since gone are important.
