Artist Statement

Over the past few decades of my career, I have been alternating between figurative and non-figurative abstraction.  Even within my figurative branch of work, recognizable shapes tend to be rather subjective, as opposed to merely reflecting a photographical reality.  Therefore, objectivity in my paintings is diminished, as I consider expressions through brush strokes to be a reflection of our inner artistic view.  Reality is reflected in our minds and automatically gets purification and stylization based on our knowledge and understanding of art.

My favourite media is mostly oil and sometimes acrylic, but incorporating different media all together often becomes the alternative direction.  In order to achieve a mysterious atmosphere, I use thin and transparent colours in layers and finish it with an impasto technique.  The result is a canvas versatile in terrain and depth.  In my works one may observe mostly straight and direct strokes that convey a bold personality, whereas curves and round forms are seldomly perceived.

In order to cast an improvised spontaneity, I avoid spending time on elegancy and craftsmanship details.  In other words, I aim to project original thoughts to the canvas in a direct fashion.  The purity of an inner emotion is ultimately captured.  It is this sense of adventurism that has led me to arrive at expressionism, the category I consider myself in.  Even though I begin my work with great spontaneity and enthusiasm, I finish it with ongoing contemplation.  A piece is often done in 2-3 hours, but editing and final touch-ups can take several weeks, even months.  Nevertheless, it is of importance for my audience to grasp the same feelings and enthusiasm that provoked me to create my work at that moment in time.  With this method of painting, I wish to reflect on the very instance that thoughts and actions merge into one to inherit the unknown from within.
