| I was introduced to wood turning as a means to relax from the stress of working with Alzheimer and Developmentally Delayed Adult clients.
The more I became involved with the wood turning, the harder it was to remove myself from the studio and go to work each day. Now that I am fully retired, I turn up to five days a week, still learning and exploring the wonders of wood turning.
Each Northwest Maple burl or wood is a hand turned vessel starting with the rough cutting of the wood to the completion process of drying, hollowing, sanding, shaping and finishing.
No wood is harvested just for the burls, but is recycled from the normal harvesting of the trees, and saved from the shredders.
With green wood, the rough-shaped piece is sealed with a water soluble wax and dried for up to a year. Then it is remounted on the lathe and turned a second time, then finished with an oil/wax finish to preserve the warm feel of the wood.
Each turning becomes a unique and one-of-a-kind piece.
