| | My late mother was an artist and some of my earliest memories are of watching her paint in oils. The smell, the vivid colors with their strange names--yellow ochre? Prussian blue?--fascinated me and I wanted to paint too. But Mom didn't want me using her materials (probably because they were messy and toxic). So one day when she wasn't looking I did an illicit painting with some half-dried-up paint from one of Mom's discarded pallets, using a piece of bark for a brush. The painting didn't look like...

These paintings are all based on a combination of additive and subtractive techniques. That is, paint is applied to the canvas and then selectively removed.
