| The desire within me to create art is like the powerful engine of a muscle car, yearning to let go and tear up the road. I am driven to do the work that I do, becoming depressed if I'm kept from it.
I love the tactile response from a wood block as I carve it. My favorite Japanese relief tools become an extension of my hand, of my will, creating the finished block I can envision at the start of the project. Before I put the lines on the wood I will first play with color combinations in Photoshop. Almost invariably I select colors that are on the warm side, and the challenge of finding the best combination is part of the thrill.
Wood relief work is tied to my previous experience as a professional photographer. I tend to use photographic techniques to create my wood relief images. In intaglio I combine many different techniques that I learned from engraving, and lately I have combined wood relief techniques into my wood engravings.
