About
Helen Saunders
Happily ensconced on the north end of Camano Island, Washington with her husband, John, and her Maine Coon cat Rum Tum Tugger, Helen feels like she has finally found home. After retiring from teaching in 2004 she started taking art classes. " I have taken art classes since I was in high school, but this time I had the time, the heart, and the energy to transform taking classes into becoming an artist." In 2006 she started to experiment with acrylic paints and mediums. Her style is still emerging and is being...

Abstract Paintings
All of the paintings in this gallery are acrylic mixed media and most are done on 3" deep canvases. Ferns, yarns, and stones are layered in with acrylic mediums.

Archives
These paintings were done when I first started to experiment with different materials for creating textures. They were displayed in a one woman show at Everett Community College.

Gyotaku
These fish prints are done using real fish on traditional papers and non traditional papers. The chops used are my name, success, and happiness. The fish are pure prints except for the eyes which I paint or choose not to paint depending on the feel.

Photography
I love to play with my photos and sometimes the results are interesting. My goal is to turn the realistic image into something other than what it obviously is. At times I use these as laser transfers on my mixed media pieces.

Journals
These hand bound journals are made from acid-free materials in Argentina and then decorated by me with various collage elements. Most have reclycled jewelry and beautiful yarns and ribbons.

"I am especially drawn to this one as it blends in my favorite colors of plum and cranberry, and the thick yarn texture, with a few baubles just pulls it all together for me. I would just need the perfect wall!"
