About

Helen Roowalla
I was born and raised in Lugano, Switzerland. At the age of 15 I moved to California where I attended high school and college. I've never attended art school but drawing has always been a part of my life. Except for the occasional art classes, I'm a self-taught artist. My earliest childhood work focused on cartoons where I developed an ability to imitate various cartoon drawing styles. Later, after attending an Ancien Art History class in college, I discovered a passion for Egyptian-style art. My work then shifted back to cartoons, but this time focusing on Japanese anime. During my last semester of college I enrolled in a drawing class, where I developed a more abstract drawing style. In 2001, I returned to Switzerland, where I reside now. I took a couple of classes sporadically but generally did not focus much on my artwork. In 2009, after some changes in my personal life, I decided to try my hand at painting and enrolled in a local painting class. After the very first lessons I realized that the class...

A full workload
2011 has started and I'm on my way to start painting my new collections and to achieve my goal of having one or more exhibits during the year. I have a total of 11 paintings in the pipeline right now. 7 for 2 different collections (2 and 5 respectively) and the remaining 4 are commissioned works.
Professional plans for 2011
I have embarked on a lot of projects to enable me to move forward with my art career, especially in the coming year: I have just found an art space, thanks from a friend from English meetup. I will be moving my art supplies there this coming week and I will be able to work a lot more on my artwork from January. I am in the process of applying to two art associations in order to expand my network.
First Exposure
I will be able to sort of exhibit my work at this Saturday's Christmas market at work. I will be selling some of my paintings as well as merchandise I have ordered through cafepress.com and shutterfly.com such as mugs, calendars, notebooks, and mousepads. I hope to be able to have an idea of what the potential market is and where the most interest lies.
Painting...from passion to profession.
I have started taking major steps in moving from being a painter just as a hobby, to a potential profession. I've started by ordering different promotional items, that will initially serve as part of my Christmas gifts. Upon seeing the reaction and feedback, I will order more.
Getting serious about my painting
I've decided to start pursuing my painting career more seriously. Step one is finding a laboratory where I can paint freely and explore painting with larger canvases and mixed media. Given the high cost of rental spaces in Switzerland, I've decided to seek out other artists who are also in need of work space.
