The photographic image
has the potential
to bridge communication
and trigger deeply
personal memories,
anchoring a person in
a place and time.
As a child, helping my grandmother in her darkroom was a dreamlike experience and I have been haunted by the art of photography ever since. I still believe there is nothing quite as magical as working in the darkroom and watching a photograph gradually appear, just like a ghost or a long lost soul on a blank sheet of white paper. It seems that my entire life’s work has been centered on the creation, viewing, and interpretation of imagery in some form, whether through drawing, painting, or photography, and now through the practice of psychotherapy. I sometimes wonder if my grandmother knew that as the images were developing in the chemical bath I was also developing as a human being in her presence, reflecting off the images as they moved and passed over one another under a red safelight.
