| The intent in my work is to push abstract paintings as far into new domains as possible. That's essential, and is at the core of the Western tradition. I don't see abstraction as a negation of realism. It's a style of painting expressing ideas in psychology, philosophy and spirituality in a unique way. Abstract art has ancient roots and I think that it needs to be re-invented again and again. All great art is abstract, rigorous and deeply felt.
I'm working with free-form naturalism, letting the materials dictate much of how the images are arrived at in my paintings. I like to use paint like clay, to form three-dimensional surfaces that express the earth's most extraordinary physical traits; its fissures, eruptions and the remains of catastrophic geological events. My palette consists of earth colors, but sometimes acid, almost chemical colors can be indicative of psychological degradation.
