| I am born and raised in Kyoto, Japan; the youngest and only daughter of a silk Kimono merchant. I decided to come to the United States to continue my education at the University of Illinois where I received a degree in Industrial Design. I have never thought of myself as a ‘rebel’ but maybe I have a bit of an independent streak as I never moved back to Japan.
New technologies have made communicating with my aging mother much easier and we now see and speak to each other on a daily basis. My mother is an accomplished oil painter of some notoriety in Japan and I thought I could take up oil painting as a common point of conversation. After a few months of painting, I received an email picture of my niece’s first born and his father and I painted the portrait for a gift to them. As a “thank you” note, she sent me a picture of her 5-month old baby boy staring at my painting. What a great satisfaction as a painter! That got me hooked. That photo is hanging in my ‘studio’ what used to be our dining room.
