The 2011 Celebration Spanish Club Scholarship will be in honor of Maricella Parra Elliott. The Spanish Club offers a college scholarship to a high school senior who is a resident of Osceola County, Florida.

Maricella was born on a farm near El Pedregal, a rural countryside village 30 kilometers outside the city of Cali, Colombia. At age 17 she left home to work in Cali and in the evenings studied English in business school where she graduated with honors. She first came to the United States in 1976 and became a U.S. citizen in 1984. Maricella worked as a translator and bilingual assistant for various non-profit organizations in the Washington, D.C. area. Her most notable position was with the Inter-American Dialogue, a U.S. based think tank for policy analysis, exchange, and communication on issues in Western Hemisphere affairs, particularly those of Latin America.
Maricella was always interested in the arts and loved learning a wide variety of skills, among which were playing the guitar, knitting, taekwondo, pottery, and watercolor painting.
