Sumi-e, or ink wash painting, embodies many of the tenets of the Zen aesthetic and emphasizes simplicity. Using ink and water on rice paper, the goal is to deeply understand the essence of the object painted and capture the instant of creation.

| Throughout my life, I have been drawn to the philosophy and aesthetics of the East, particularly Zen Buddhism. The capturing of the moment in a haiku, the dramatic black on white of Zen paintings, the finger pointing to the moon have all resonated in my spirit. As a self-taught artist, all of my understanding of this art form has come through books and the artwork itself.
The process of painting is a meditative practice and I seek to allow the brush and ink to speak without interference. My painting style includes ‘splashing ink’ and ‘flying white’ techniques. Thus far, my artwork has two expressions. Some pictures are created in a few seconds with quick, decisive strokes of the brush. Other pieces are layered in shades of black and gray, allowing drying time between applications.
In addition to my work in art, I am the co-writer of Rocketo , an Eisner-nominated graphic novel, a published poet, and part-time marketing consultant in Northern California. Visit my blog at www.marieataylor.wordpress.com .... |
