34 Sir Thomas Muir Drive Vanes Uitenhage 6229 South Africa
| Martin Layton was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England in 1953. He came to South Africa with his parents as a young lad of 6 years. He is mainly self taught but did do art as an extra-curricular subject at school and studied commercial art at the Russell Road Technical College in Port Elizabeth. He has painted over the years but decided to become a full-time professional artist about 15 years ago.
He is a surrealist artist, although his works crossover between surrealism and realism. He likes to make the viewer question and think about the work. You are invited to put your own interpretation on the work and so make it a more personal experience.
Many of the paintings are inspired by actual experiences using objects and scenes which are familiar to him. Certain objects have personal meaning to him and may appear in more than one work.
Martin uses acrylics extensively, this having proved a natural transition from water colours which he tended to favour in the early days.... |
