About

Phyllis Baker
MAKING ART has always been an integral part of my life. Throughout the years, no matter what the medium, the joy I experience as an artist has everything to do with the actual process –the “making” itself. The journey from “blank canvas” to finished piece is always an adventure. Printmaking, and specifically monotype-making, is a sensory experience for me. The second I step into a printshop the smell of the ink hits me, and I feel like I’m home. I love mixing these inks with a pallet knife to create delicious, almost edible one-of-a kind colors; I love the soft ‘ssssst’ sound as the roller picks up ink from the pallet and transfers it to the plate. Making marks and transferring my energy directly onto the paper involves a great deal of physicality which is extremely satisfying both mentally and physically. Even the final turning of the handwheel on the press and the energy that’s transferred is a part of the process for me. When I’m in the right groove, the act of creating an image on a plate feels...

A Dream Come True
It's been a little over a year since I last blogged, and during that time I made a not-so-spontaneous decision to build an addition to my home and create a printshop. After a few false starts due to zoning issues, I hired a contractor and began the process (blueprints, adjustments, new drawings, etc.). My original intention was to purchase a tabletop Takach press (the company is right here in Albuquerque and make fine machines).
Call for Artists
Some friends of mine are involved in The Cradle Project and are looking for artists to participate and help make this fundraising project a success. Please visit the url below and send it on to anyone you know who may be interested in either participating as an artist or sponsoring a cradle.
Stop By the Corrales Harvest Festival
Speaking of fall...if you're in the neighborhood this weekend, visit the Corrales Harvest Festival, take a hay ride and stop by the Third Moon Gallery! They're having a "clothesline" sale and lots of art will be offered for really good prices. I will have a number of pieces from my online collections for sale, as will the other artists from Third Moon Gallery.
Hooray for fall!
Right on cue, the weather has changed and it feels and smells like fall, say amen! Isn’t it wonderful, that just as you’ve had absolutely enough of the season at hand, a new one takes over? Here in New Mexico fall means fresh roasted chiles, and you can hardly go anywhere without that heavy, pungent smell as they turn and toast slowly in the hopper. Today I will buy a bushel, package the freshly roasted peppers in small bags and freeze them to have during the coming year.
Art Cards Now Available
I finally got myself organized enough to begin offering these beautiful art cards. They are printed on Crane Museo with archival inks. I love this paper- it feels so substantial and rich.
