All Artwork Shawn Dean Artist Statement Ever since I could remember, art has been the unwavering constant in my life. I have always been a visual learner and obsessed with color, texture, shape and line. I would see a fabric design and immediately want to break it down and understand it.

Visual Sound Shawn Dean Visual Sound I am fully aware that many, if not most or all, artists simply listen to music while working. To take that form of inspiration one step further and to get to a more organic and raw state of the music’s influence on the body and mind, I use music as my inspiration and subject. Listening to music can be a state altering experience.

The Road Once Traveled Shawn Dean The Road Once Traveled… My father was a very unique man... He lived his life as a free spirit, an artist, a lover, a father and a friend, among so many other things.

There, I realized the excitement I had towards Modern and Post-Modern art. I finally put all of the pieces together and came alive for the first time. It was like a shock to my system. I delved into abstraction, symbolism, non-representational and conceptual art, trying to find a bridge that connected them all. For so long, I had every idea what made me interested but it wasn’t until my senior year at MICA that I owned what I was doing. My thesis teacher, Jo Smail, told me so...
