| With my work, I am questioning traditional roles in fine art as well as attempting to obscure the line between painting and sculpture. The works also deal with the idea of "craft", as a verb as well as a noun, questioning the preconceived ideas that this term carries. I am interested in the dialogs that are created with the interplay of sculpture and painting. While the works are formally defined as sculpture, they deal with painting issues on many levels. I am striving to use the third dimension to allow the works to discuss painting issues, but to achieve something that traditional painting cannot.
In my Ceramic Painting series, most of the works reference particularly dominant painting movements. While the earlier works speak directly about the New York School painters of the 1950’s and 60’s with their minimal surface treatments and large scale, the Off-sets draw their references more from the Pop artists of the 1970’s.
