"Behind me are some small studies that I sometimes attempt to enlarge.....with not much success. I've found that working from studies robs my paintings of a sense of urgency...they lack a sense of immediacy and impact. I do keep them up as a kind of visual stimulus.

I typically will work on two to three paintings at a time....while one is drying, move on to the next. Having said that, it still takes a long time to complete even one painting.

I use wide house painter's brushes. You can really load them up with paint, and I don't get too distracted about re-loading my brush when painting. Latex house paints provide the best feel for me. They have and extremely thick, rubbery feel that I have grown accustomed to.

Most paintings are re-worked many times over, some of the larger paintings will end up weighing 50 to 60 lbs, due to amount of paint on them. On rare occasions, some canvases wind up with so much paint on them, they are not capable of being stretched.......while I might really like them, I no choice but to destroy them. Fortunately, this has only occurred a handful of times in the past twenty years or so."
