I was born in the Netherlands in the 1950s, became a lawyer in the 1970s, and worked over the next almost 3 decades in the Netherlands, Brussels, New York, Paris, Johannesburg and Washington, DC.
I have always loved to draw and paint, but starting 1986 I began studying art seriously, first with Dutch artist Fred Adam. In the mid-90s, after 7 years of lawyering in Paris, I moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, and studied at the Johannesburg Art Foundation, as well as privately with painter Thea Soggot and sculptor Isolde Krams (now in Berlin). I moved to Washington, DC in 2001 and enrolled at the Corcoran College of Art and Design. I studied with William Christenberry, Jeanne Potter, Mary del Popolo, Bill Newman, Steve Cushner, Judy Southerland and Annette Polan. I also love "to take photos".
In 1988, I received a commission from the President of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal in The Hague, the Netherlands, for a drawing of the Tribunal building, converted to a limited edition of prints which are used as courtesy gifts. In 2003, this drawing has also become the emblem of the Tribunal's website at www.iusct.org.
In 2005, I completed 17 portraits for the exhibit “Faces of the Fallen” at the Women’s Memorial at Arlington Cemetery – see www.facesofthefallen.org – then became a member of the exhibition’s Organizing Board. At the end of 2007, the exhibit came to an end and the portraits were donated to the subjects' next of kin.
In 2006, my design for a painted violin, “Hommage to Vivaldi”, was chosen for the project “Art of Note” of the National Symphony Orchestra and the violin was displayed for three months at the Kennedy Center Gift Shop and raffled by composer Marvin Hamlisch during the NSO Pops Concert on June 1, 2007.
One of my paintings (They Always Watch and Judge) was included in a juried show in Gallery 31 at the Corcoran Museum/College of Art + Design from December 12, 2007 to January 6, 2008.
One of my photos, from the series Soweto Sunrise, is included in the publication "Pink Attitude" of Editions LIZ, Paris, France, available at Amazon.com.
During the April 22, 2008, Corcoran College 123rd Annual Student Awards Ceremony I received the Linda and Douglas Rosenbaum Scholarship for Excellence in Drawing and Painting.
I currently work on portrait commissions and on a series of large-scale paintings on women's deep-seated emotions and on life’s dark undercurrents. Both are unpredictable ...
