Dear WCA SD,

It took quite a bit of deliberation to jury Telling Stories and even more to come up with the placements.

Dancing Till the End of Time-Artist, Beverly Mills, won Best In Show. It had the balance of representation and inference, movement and static graphic, and intellectual and emotional content to keep me going back for another look.

Harvest-Artist, Elaine Alibrandi, won 1st Prize with a hefty dose of  honesty and bravery,

Mr. Magnuson-Artist,  Kathy Ostman-Magnusen, 2nd Prize with some outstanding portraiture accompanied by a well written essay accompanying the piece, and

Under the Boardwalk-Artist, Margi Weir, 3rd Prize with great use of graphics in a digital format with a very direct message.

I thank you all for the opportunity to jury the show. You can't beat a good story.

Regards,
Moya Devine

Artist’s Statement
Savage conflict.  Civilized brilliance.  My work explores these two human extremes.  A knowledge of history seldom alters them:  we keep killing each other, we keep creating.

I am stunned by the narcotic of war, by its justifications and its costs.  I read about it, analyze it and try to understand its persistence.  As a palliative, I turn to cities and places I have loved, whose centuries of cultural life move us up the evolutionary ladder, away from violence.  I also turn to symbolic figures or icons that represent ingenuity and courage.  At times, I sequester myself in a world of simplicity, a world of blacks and whites.

I explore these extremes using the emotive punch of primary colors, mixed forms and found materials - whatever media will illustrate the persistence of war and the life-line of creativity.  Each series begins with the idea; the materials join in the dialogue.

EXHIBITION AND AWARDS
Comments from our Judge, Hazel Ross

Before I looked at the entrants I consulted Webster’s Dictionary to clarify the possible interpretations of the word “transformation”, which defined transformation as “changes in form, appearance, nature or character”.

Choosing the winners was not an easy task and I was more than impressed with the creative interpretations expressed, and the range and use of media used by the entrants.

I was completely captivated by “Flowing Streams Chrysalis” and I had no hesitation in awarding “Best of Show” to this piece which really intrigued me and drew me into its interior and its complexities.

I loved the organic energy and freshness of “Meadows”

I was moved by the idea of beauty emerging from pain in “Vertebral Distractions” as well as by the delicacy of the drawing.

I loved the feeling of the nascent brooding power in “Cauldron” and the unusual use of the media.

Thank you for allowing me to judge “Transformations”.
