Metal, Glass, Concrete, 3M LED lighting, 20 year suspended
silver finish, hand painted glass with semiprecious stone (and other texture)
and two part non-yellowing clear coat, aluminum wire torso- 4ft x 4ft glass (cognitive) 20inch glass and housing hand: 36in x 27 in
Description of work: This
three-piece sculpture comprised of: a grounded torso, a glass cognitive mind
grounded on the floor, and a coiled hand suspended in the air describe the
phenomenon of disjointedness of the mind, body, and spirit.
The torso depicts the equilibrium of the body, the strength from
the core, and the grounding in the feet to the Earth. The feet allow the actual energy transference
from nature and the Earth into our bodies through electromagnetic grounding, much
like the ground rod from your home leading into the soil. The roots under the torso, growing down from the
feet, depict the deep penetration of the body submersion in the natural world,
and by being encased in a box, even hint at a connection to societal norms, and
desires of earthly pleasures in life.
Connectivity to nature, and the disconnection of our minds from the
natural world when we concentrate too highly on society are the two polarities
the torso depicts.
The glass mind separated from the body illustrates the dissimilarities
in the cognitive power and the abilities of the mind, in contrast to the
limited physicality of our world. The
mind is capable of anything, and as our forefathers believed, each generation
seems to break down previously perceived boundaries. The mind is represented in two glass panes:
the first exhibiting the outer appearance, and the inner abstractly
demonstrating the cognitive process inside the mind. The interior light demonstrates that extra element
of a soul, consciousness, awareness that cannot be explained by science. The pieces are all encompassed in a silver
housing to demonstrate the loneliness of the mind without an outlet or means of
communication. The hand, in the air, is
her communication.
The elevated hand signifies the creation power, and how it is
a divine gift. The power to create, manipulate,
translate our thoughts, destroy… and change our realities is a unique privilege
that works harmoniously with all of our other “parts”. No matter how connected, or disconnected, unhealthy,
or unhealthy… we are, we’re all still able to create. Practicing this unique ability leads to harmony,
connectivity, and rehabilitation.
How it fits theme: It
tells the story of the phenomena of disconnection: from nature, one another,
self, and ultimately higher power or religion.
In the past decade many in our society have transformed perceptions of
mass consumption and conservation, however, there is still a disconnection that can be healed only after continuous reminding.
