  Rich Arriagada

Born in San Diego 1972

1973 Age 1: My first abstract piece done in gerber carrot and pea. I thought it was well executed. Mom had a different opinon.

1975 Age 3: Experimented heavily with the Crayola brand. Completed several abstract pieces on my bedroom walls, toys, clothes and other household items.

1982 Age 10: Using my Crayola watercolor set. I complete a fair number of oddball pieces. My style shifts from abstract to surreal. Grandma is impressed I can paint within lines. I take up sculpture with my legos.

1984-1986 Age 12-14: I shift to graphite and color pencil and develop cartoon characters. I gain recognition amonst my peers and voted best artist of my class.

1987-1991 Age 15-18: I shift to Tempura. I start to trully discover my abilities, and recognize my potential. I take several art classes and complete more pieces in the surreal style. One painting took me a full school year to complete. It is now in private collection. Mom has it.

1992-1993 Age 19-20: Another shift, this time to Acrylic. I take painting classes in college and discover that this is trully what I want to do for a living. I experiment with landscapes.

1993-2002 Age 21-29: I call this the "Dark Ages". Within this time period I don't paint or draw. I give away my brushes and easel, and my paper and pencil. I make nothing. The artist inside me has gone to sleep.

2003-present: I have an awakening !! The flame from within that burned out is re-ignited. I venture to the art store and purchase brushes, paint, easel, palette and a couple 16 x 20 canvas boards. I look at my bare, white canvas and fear that I can't paint. But I push through this fear and complete my first painting in 10 years. I call it "The Visitor".

I participate in group art shows and I'm currently presenting my art on First Thursday for "Artists for the Community" on NW 10th and Glisan.

At this point, I'm not represented in a gallery. I have sold a number of paintings which are in private collection from the east coast to the west.
