This piece deals with the inevitability of change... with all it's faces, and also reflects that with all change comes potential... the power to mould something New from the ashes of what has gone before as we move ever forward through the cycles of life. The color schematics I chose reflect the nature of fire, the ancient Pagan symbol for transformation. It burns through the old, and though we mourn the loss, the seed of the New has already taken root. In the painting you can see the image of the elusive Demeter, an Earth goddess who myth tells bestowed winter upon the earth. This was an act of mourning for her daughter Persephone, who was bound to return to Hades in into the underworld for 3 months ever year. I represent Demeter in my painting AFTER she suffered the loss of her daughter, mourned through the dead winter months, and has now come full circle to blow life back into the world as the start of spring.... armed with a gratitude for her daughter's presence she may never have has without the Loss she endured. |
