If you are planning to engage in floral business in America, we do not recommend you to learn Japanese Ikebana arrangement (unless your goal is to teach Ikebana). Learning European (or American) flower arrangement is much better for you to use your skill for your floral business. The reason behind this is as mentioned below:
A. The style of Ikebana arrangement cannot be used for running a floral shop. If you want to sell flower arrangements through FTD service, Ikebana style arrangement does not fit.
B. Ikebana arrangements are seldom used for wedding or funeral ceremonies in America. The majority of floral decorations at weddings and funerals is done according to European or American style designs.
C. Ikebana arrangements often use
Kenzan and
Suiban, which is time consuming and a little bit difficult UNLESS the designer is well experienced in Ikebana arrangements. In this sense Ikebana is not so suitable for floral business.
California Flower Art Academy offers classes for not only European arrangements but also for Ikebana. When a prospective students asks which is better for doing floral business in the States, we always answer saying "European floral desings is ideal in various kinds of sense".
