The photo shows a creative anthurium floral arrangement made at the classroom during a floral design lesson at
California Flower Art Academy. This arrangement is quite unique and recommended only for experienced students who already earned a decent floral design skill.
No matter what you learn, it is very important to follow the rule. Especially when you are a beginner, first thing you need to do is earn the orthodox skill that is considered common and well accepted by the majority of people. After you have lots of experience and successfully earned a decent skill, you MAY recognize that it is not always necessary to follow the rule. Then you can do it your way and your style. Floral arrangement is not exceptional.
When learning floral designs, most students start with following orthodox rules that are commonly accepted in the world of flower arrangement. Namely they USUALLY make arrangement in the order mentioned below:
In the soaked floral foams (also known as "Oasis"):
Step one: Insert mass flowers
Step two: Insert filler flowers
Step three: Place line flowers
REMARKS: The sequence, order or process mentioned above COULD be changed depending on the respective situation of each arrangement. However even if the arranging order is different, the basics about 3 elements described above remains as an orthodox way.
Most beginners usually follow above step of arrangements. As they learn floral designs more and more deeply, they MAY eventually recognize it is not always necessary to follow this guideline. Yes, not only regarding flower arrangements but also for many other skills such as driving and swimming etc., they are required to earn basic skills until they fully mastered basics. Once they have earned a really decent skill, they can do it their way to the extent the applicable regulation allows (especially in case of driving).
One important advice for beginner students learning floral arrangement is they should not make haste for moving to the next level of skills. Namely if they try to do arrangement their way and their style before mastering floral designs, they will face difficult situation where they cannot develop or enhance their skill any further. Ignoring basic skills will never do you good.
If you learn floral arrangement starting from scratch, your eventual goal MAY be to become a floral artist who can arrange your way, your style. California Flower Art Academy offers extensive programs covering Elementary and Intermediate Course to Advanced to Instructor Course for European floral arrangements.
