Floral design: Are you Kenzan or Floral Foam oriented ?
Above photos show Kenzan (left and right) and Floral Foam (center). All these flower arrangements in this page were made by our students under instructions of our floral design teachers during real lessons in the classroom of California Flower Art Academy.
The first photo shows Ikebana arrangement that was made in the form of Moribana. This style uses Kenzan (frog: needlepoint holder to hold flowers and other elements). As shown in the above photo, Kenzan has uncountable number of needles mounted on the iron plate. When arranging flowers, flower stems are inserted onto these needles.
On the other hand, the second arrangement is European style design that uses floral foam (whose well-known brand is "Oasis"). Unlike above mentioned Kenzan, floral foams look like sponge and made of chemical stuff. Floral designers insert flower stems and other elements into this foam and floral foam is usually easier to use than Kenzan.
Although Kenzan is not used for making regular kind of European arrangements, we teach how to use Kenzan in one of designs covered in Fresh Flower Arrangement Advanced Course. Namely free garden style arrangement uses Kenzan in this course.
Otherwise all European floral arrangements are made using floral foam. Generally speaking floral foam is easier to use than Kenzan and it is more flexible in terms of angle for inserting flowers than Kenzan. If you are interested in Kenzan or floral foams, why not join under mentioned short seminar where you can experience how to use them: All materials (such as Kenzan, Suiban, Floral Foam and Container) are included in the lesson fee for following programs:
