Both arrangements were made by our students under the directions of our floral arrangement instructor during lessons in the classroom of
California Flower Art Academy. Upper one is European style design and the lower one is Ikebana arrangement. By way of taking lessons at our school, you can earn practical skills for making these kinds of designs. The title of this page asks you how to decide which you should learn European arrangement or Japanese Ikebana. Consider following factors to make a decision:
1. Mainly for which purpose you want to learn, hobby or business ? If it is hobby, you can choose either one. However if it is business, you need to learn European arrangement because the skill of Ikebana arrangement is seldom used for doing floral business in the United States such as running a floral shop, offering wedding or funeral floral decorations etc.
2. Which culture do you want to learn through learning floral designs ? If it is European culture, choose European arrangement. If it is Japanese culture, you learn Ikebana.
The point is if or not you are thinking to use your skill for business in the United States.

Unless your goal is enjoying Japanese floral art strictly as a hobby or volunteer, you cannot effectively use your Ikebana skill. To our best knowledge and belief, Ikebana is not recommended for doing floral business in America. As far as you would like to do general (common) flower business in the United States, you had better learn a western style design which European arrangement falls in.
As already mentioned above, you can learn either style for enjoying as a hobby. If you want to make interior floral arrangement to decorate your home, you can use the skill of both styles. Incidentally, for people who already have a skill of western style floral designs, learning Ikebana arrangement will help create unique floral arrangement like no other because you can make a new designs by blending both styles. For those who have no experience in floral designs and want to learn from scratch, following programs are recommended:
A. European arrangement:
B. Japanese traditional floral art:
REMARKS: We do not offer Ikebana Arrangement Instructor Course. None of our Ikebana courses is designed for training students to become Ikebana Instructor. For more information, please contact info@california-academy.com
