These flower arrangements were made by our students under instruction of our Ikebana teacher during real lessons in the classroom of California Flower Art Academy.
As usual it is messy on the training table during a lesson. Nevertheless Ikebana arrangement looks pretty attractive. Both Ikebana arrangements are Moribana that usually uses Kenzan (frog: needlepoint holder) on which flower stems are inserted to be firmly held and Kenzan is placed in the shallow (and flat) container called Suiban specifically designed for Moribana arrangement.
In case of western style floral arranagement (European or American design), we usually use floral foam (also known as "Oasis") instead of Kenzan and regular vase instead of Suiban. The use of Kenzan and Suiban is one of features of Ikebana. Good thing about Kenzan and Suiban is they can be used repeatedly almost forever although floral foam is disposable and it is common to use a brand new foam every time we make a new arrangement.
After mastering Moribana, students usually learn another kind of Ikebana arrangement that is called Nageire which does not use Kenzan and Suiban. Instead it uses INSTANTLY MADE holder (or stopper) made of part of branch/element and a tall container (in which Kenzan cannot be placed). Therefore another skill is required to make Nageire arrangement.
