These arrangements were designed and made by our students under the directions of our instructor during real lessons in the classroom of
California Flower Art Academy. Since we teach both Japanese Ikebana (Japanese traditional floral art) and European flower arrangement, some people are at a loss about which they should learn. Or some people do not have clear picture about the difference between these two types of arrangements. It is fully up to our students which they should learn. Then what is the guide line when making a decision. Following information will be of some help for you to decide which style you should learn:
A. Japanese Ikebana:
This is a Japanese traditional floral art. The way of arranging flowers is different from European designs. Namely they arrange using different tools, different idea and concept. They often use what is called
Kenzan and
Suiban. These are items specifically designed for doing Ikebana arrangement. Unlike floral foam (used for European arrangement), Kenzan is very heavy and it can be used repeatedly. It is made of metal plate on which uncountable needles are mounted. And flower stems are inserted onto these needles. Suiban is a shallow type container in which Kenzan is placed.

The way Ikebana is arranged cannot be used for doing floral business in USA. FTD and other similar companies who deliver flowers nationwide does not handle Ikebana arrangements. In order to make Ikebana arrangements, detail oriented and delicate manipulation of flowers and stems are required. Therefore the skill of Ikebana arrangement is not suitable for doing business in USA. However it is very good to people who are interested in learning Japanese traditional culture and totally different concept of arrangement. In short Ikebana is useful for enjoying as a hobby.
B. European arrangement:
This is close to American arrangement. However it requires detail oriented and more delicate adjustment is needed than American arrangement. European arrangement is good not only for hobby but also for business. Once you master European arrangement, you have no difficulties of making a variety of designs from simple home decorations to party and event arrangements, wedding to funeral decorations as well as corporate arrangements. You have no difficulties of doing business through FTD etc who delivers flowers on nationwide basis. In short, European arrangement can be used not only for hobby but also for business in USA.
