These photos show Ikebana arrangement made at the classroom during a real Ikebana lesson at California Flower Art Acaemy. If you already have a skill of American or European floral arranging and are looking for how to make a difference compared with other floral designers, one of the effective solutions is learning Japanese Ikebana. As far as you live in the current floral design world, it is very difficult or next to impossible to earn a skill for making new type of floral decorations. By way of learning Ikebana arrangement, your common sense already imprinted in your mind COULD be totally changed. In a sense you MAY find a revolutionary and new concept in floral art.
The reason behind this suggestion is we sometimes find contemporary floral designs of which arranging method is sometimes close to Ikebana arranging method. Back in 1980's when European floral arrangement was introduced in Japan, many Ikebana artists showed interest in this new floral art and some of them mastered European floral design to find a new trend of floral art. Actually the new style of floral art was born by way of blending Japanese and European way of arrangement.
The approach in the other way around can be made. Namely European (or American) floral artists learn Japanese Ikebana and find the difference between these two arts. Some of them are expected to adopt or follow Japanese way of floral arranging and the new concept found in Ikebana COULD be utilized when making their own floral designs. Actually the way Ikebana artist does is that they sometimes do not use the design materials as is. Instead they often manipulates flowers and plant stems to create new atmosphere which could not be made by following western style arrangement.
