The owner of California Flower Art Academy was born and grew up in Japan. And she has lots of connections with floral designers, instructors and floral organizations in Japan, we know quite well about the situation of Japanese floral industry, flower designers and flower arranging classes. And also we believe that we are in a better position to make a fair comparison between Japanese and American situations.
Quite frankly speaking, we find much less number of floral design classes and professional floral designers in America compared with Japan. Take a number of floral arrangement school in USA including small and large scale ones for instance, we cannot find lots of schools no matter which state it is. Although we can find lots of florists, we seldom find schools specializing or focusing on floral designs in the United States.
When we take a look at the situation in Japan, it looks like it is very different from the United States. Not only regarding schools but also floral designers, we can find uncountable number in Japan. As you know Japan has floral art called Ikebana that has more than 1,500 year history. Therefore there are so many Ikebana instructors. In addition to Ikebana instructors, European floral design is quite popular among young generations. Back in 1980's, when European floral arrangement was introduced in Japanese market, this "brand new" floral art spread very fast all over Japan. Many of Ikebana designers and instructors learned European floral arrangement. Since the foundation of floral art was already established through Ikebana arts in Japan, it did not take so long until European floral art became quite popular. At the moment, we can find so many Ikebana classes and European floral design classes all over Japan.
This is partially because there has been a traditional culture of learning something in their daily life and once they start learning it, they usually continue for a long period of time. Many people continue taking lessons until they get certification of advanced course or instructors. This situation can be found not only on Ikebana but also European floral arrangement. And students who complete instructor course often starts offering their own classes.
Being such situation there are so many floral schools, students, instructors and also graduates all over Japan. California Flower Art Academy
